Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice may be preparing to speed into view later this year, but there’s a far more momentous occasion on the way for SEGA’s blue blur.

2016 signals another commendable milestone for their Sonic the Hedgehog series, in marking 25 years since the chili dog-loving mammal was first introduced to the world on Mega Drive (or Genesis, for those in the US).

SEGA had commemorated Sonic’s 20th anniversary with Sonic Generations, so speculation is rife as to what next year could bring – especially after the official Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary logo was spotted at last month’s annual Vegas Licensing Expo.

Its early appearance was due to the licensing team having to make plans “really far in advance” according to Aaron Webber, SEGA of America’s PR and social media manager for the Sonic the Hedgehog brand.

“There’s definitely stuff that’s in the works for the 25th Anniversary,” Webber explained to SEGAbits. “I don’t have any info on what that is. We’ll talk a lot more about 25th Anniversary quite early next year, but in the meantime, for the fans, there are no hidden messages in that logo.”
