SEGA has touched on their plans to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary in Toy World Magazine, an article listing the blue blur as a ‘hot property’ as the publisher looks to invite new licensing opportunities.

The Sonic Stadium spotted it in the publication’s January issue, a full-page advert being accompanied by text that outlines what the year ahead holds.

“With the continued roll out of the new CG series Sonic Boom, as well as new games and anniversary celebration events throughout the year, 2016 is set to be the best year yet,” the article reads.

While it continues to largely discuss merchandising plans, we learn about a Classic Sonic licensing programme that taps into the character’s heritage – a period that spans “across multiple iterations from pixel Sonic to comic book Sonic.”

SEGA are said to have “secured strong partnerships for the Sonic franchise,” which covers sectors such as toys, publishing, apparel and limited edition collectibles, but are looking to expand on that selection.

But, most importantly, the celebrations will last all year. “Branded events” are mentioned, and SEGA are looking to implement retail initiatives to ensure that they can try to get everyone reminiscing about the iconic character.

We have Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice to look forward to, but recent rumblings certainly made it sound that SEGA have more surprises incoming!

  1. I have to say. It is looking more and more likely we are getting a ‘Sonic Generations 2’ and i am looking forward to finding out what levels they are going to include from previous games. A 3D version of the Marble Zone would be awesome.
