The witching hour strikes once more, with SEGA having released 8-Bit Bayonetta as a free download on Steam. And, it’s not an April Fool’s joke either.

The Umbran Witch is reborn in 8-bit pixelated glory and climaxes in a simplistic game that requires players to jump and shoot down angelic foes as they rack up a high score. But, there’s more to this game than initially meets the eye.

The game has 16 Steam achievements which collectively reveal artwork for the first Bayonetta. If the In the Face and High Score achievements are matched up, players are directed to an accompanying countdown website.

The number in the URL is a reference to the Umbran Witch’s birthday on 19th December 1411, with the countdown expected to come to an end on 11th April 2017.

Speculation so far leads to the belief that SEGA will soon reveal plans to release the original Bayonetta on PC, with the third-person action game currently only available on Wii U, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
