At a point in time where Super Mario 64 had successfully transitioned Nintendo’s portly plumber into the 3D arena, SEGA had struggled to do the same with their similarly admired hedgehog according to Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.

The Dreamcast’s Sonic Adventure had been a raw concept for what Sonic’s future would become, now refined through his escapades in Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations in recent years.

“Yes there was a struggle in 3D Sonic games,” Iizuka admitted to Nintendo Life. “From the first 3D type Sonic game Sonic Adventure, we tried various levels and environment in 3D. This is because we felt there is more possibility for improvement in 3D type Sonic.

“So in Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, we added new gameplay on top of the existing Sonic titles to make a high quality game.”

SEGA will hope that Sonic Lost World will continue such uphill momentum for their iconic hero, set to release across Europe tomorrow.
