Square Enix has announced that Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven will be released on Nintendo Switch in the coming months.
xeen is the developer behind this “ground-up remake,” which, beyond its standalone story, will offer modern visuals, reworked strategic gameplay and other enhancements.
After your homeland is attacked by one of the legendary Seven Heroes, a branching story of vengeance and redemption unfolds in which you must fight to protect everything that you hold dear.
With the free-form scenario system that the SaGa franchise has become known for, your choices will impact how the story develops such as who inherits the imperial throne with each successive generation.
“This marks the first time I’m handling a SaGa title,” explains producer Shinichi Tatsuke. “Around three years ago, we had just completed development and launch of Trials of Mana, which I worked on as the producer. Just as I was in the process of exploring what title to work on next alongside our development partner xeen Inc., Kawazu-san (SaGa franchise general director, Akitoshi Kawazu) and the SaGa team invited me to join them. That’s how I started working on the development for this title.
“Working on this title made me realise once again how Romancing SaGa 2 is a very unique and captivating game, not only by the standards of the times back then, but of the modern era as well.
“The imperial succession, Free-Form Scenario system, Glimmers, and the wonderful characters make me believe that this game will absolutely hold its own in today’s day and age. We put our heads together to understand how we can make this title feel intuitive for existing fans and new players alike.
“The team is currently working together in the last stretch of development. Please look forward to the launch of the new Romancing SaGa 2, which inherits the traditional DNA of the SaGa franchise, but also incorporates various added elements.”
Composer Kenji Ito adds: “I would like to congratulate the team on the announcement of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven! For this title, I newly arranged all the tracks I had originally created for the Super Famicom version. Some players may be wary of that change, but please rest assured that the tracks have been published anew to reflect the deep affection that the producer, Shinichi Tatsuke, has for Romancing SaGa 2. I’ve also prepared new tracks for this title, so I would love for players to get to hear these tracks all together.”
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven will be released at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 24 October 2024.
