Marvelous Inc., XSEED Games and Marvelous Europe have announced that Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin has sold more than one million copies worldwide.

The sales have “far surpassed” developer Edelweiss’ expectations, who have updated the game with language support for Latin American Spanish and Simplified Chinese.

The game has also been updated with “the ability to hold a dog and a cat at once,” while “your dog will now come running to greet you when you return home from adventuring,” and there have been other balancing adjustments and improvements.

“We’re thrilled that so many people have experienced Princess Sakuna’s many adventures, from the relationships she forms with her human and animal companions to the unique charms of traditional Japanese rice cultivation,” enthuses XSEED Games executive vice president and rice enthusiast Kenji Hosoi.

“We hope adding support for more languages and new storefronts, as well as fun additions from Edelweiss such as new ways of interacting with your pets, will entice more players around the world to experience her journey and the learn about the power of rice!”

From the two-man team behind Astebreed, the game combines side-scrolling action with crafting and farming simulation. You play as Sakuna, a spoiled harvest goddess banished to a dangerous island with a group of outcast humans. As she explores the beautiful, forbidding environments of the island, she will also find a home in a mountain village, proving herself worthy of her title by harvesting rice and bettering the lives of humans.

In addition to being a fresh take on Japanese mythology and a love letter to action games, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is an ode to rice and an engrossing simulation of the craft behind the agriculture.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is now available at retail and on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide.
