The rumour emerged this week that Retro Studios has been working on Star Fox: Grand Prix, a racing game for Nintendo Switch that has been likened to a cross between Diddy Kong Racing and F-Zero. But, it sounds like the Texas-based developer has had a second project in development.

In reporting on the rumour that’s now doing the rounds, Game Informer wrote in response: “We have heard many of the same rumors, though cannot and do not confirm the veracity of the sources.

“Rumors of the game have been swirling for several months in light of talk from some sources that Retro Studios’ title has been struggling, with many at both Retro and Nintendo growing frustrated with the state of the project. These sources did not confirm whether the project being worked on was this Star Fox title.”

After that, in their article Kotaku added: “We’ve heard the same from a source plugged into goings-on at Nintendo, and we’ve also heard from two other sources that the Austin, Texas-based Retro had a separate project that went through a rocky development cycle and may in fact be canceled.”

As to what that turbulent, separate project was remains unclear, and we may never have the chance to learn more about it if it has been shelved as rumoured. For now, we can only wait to see whether Star Fox: Grand Prix makes an appearance at E3 2018.
