Rumour: Pokémon Switch Game Has Evolved Into Gen 8

The “core RPG Pokémon title” that is in development for Nintendo Switch has been shrouded in secrecy since it was announced at E3 2017.

While The Pokémon Company president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara has spoken about how he sees it “as a chance to create Pokémon that goes deeper and with a higher level of expression,” and Game Freak co-founder Junichi Masuda has offered his thoughts on the brand’s future on the portable home console, we, along with the rest of the Internet, continue to hold out for when the next pocket monster game will be revealed.

As to when that will happen is unclear, but, thanks to the Official Nintendo Magazine in Spain, we may have our first few pointers on what to expect.

The publication mentions that the game(s) will release in “2018 or later,” which is something that we know from Nintendo’s first-party release schedule, but what will raise eyebrows is the reference to the Nintendo Switch releases to mark a shift into Generation 8.

“After a lifetime associated with portable consoles, the canonical Pokémon series will jump to the television with its eight generation,” Official Nintendo Magazine writes, loosely translated. “Game Freak and The Pokémon Company are rethinking the saga to surprise with new mechanics, in 2018 or later.”

Last year a Pokémon Direct was broadcast one week before E3 2018, in which The Pokémon Company and Nintendo revealed Pokkén Tournament DX, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, and that Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver would release on the Virtual Console service for Nintendo 3DS. We can hope that it won’t be long, then, until we learn more.
