After the Wii U Virtual Console service added Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS games, many had hoped that GameCube games would join in on the action. With Nintendo Switch, it seems that time has now come.

Eurogamer has backed Source Gaming’s report that Nintendo European Research & Development (NERD) is responsible for engineering the Virtual Console service on Nintendo Switch, with three separate sources confirming that GameCube games will soon return to the spotlight.

Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee have already been prepared for the home gaming system, with testing underway on Animal Crossing as the next potential release.

The town simulator had included classic NES titles that could be played within the game, and it is reported that these are all now running in the Virtual Console build.

Nintendo is also exploring whether Nintendo Switch can support the GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U, although a final decision is still left to be made.

Conversation also continues around which specific platforms the Virtual Console library will draw from, but, as with Wii U, there will be an upgrade programme that will allow those that have previously purchased the games to upgrade at a discounted price.

Nintendo Switch will release worldwide in March 2017.

  1. I wish they have it set up like XB1 so if you have the disc you can install from the disc but since the Switch doesn’t have a drive I will have to pay $1000+ assuming they charge $10 per game. I have 4 GameCube storage cases which has over a total of 100 games.
If they add Wii to the VC then I would have to spend over $2000.
And that is if the games stay at or below $10 each.
