Rumour: Nintendo Switch Achievement System In The Works

Nintendo is hard at work on an achievement system for Nintendo Switch, according to the latest rumblings to surface online.

That rumour emerged in a Reddit AMA with Crunching Koalas, a Polish developer that has released Lichtspeer: Double Speer Edition on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch this week, and, in looking to promote their kaleidoscopic action arcade lightspear-throwing simulator, they may have inadvertently revealed early plans for an achievement system.

“Nintendo doesn’t have an official support for Achievements and Leaderboards, like Sony or Microsoft but we know that they’re working on it. We’ll see how it goes and we’ll add the rankings along the way,” co-owner Tom Tomaszewski explained, when asked whether their game has online rankings.

“Also, the game has multiple levels, game modes and difficulty levels, and because of that, the rankings seem a little bit scattered. At least that was our experience from other platforms.”

When prompted whether that was something that they should have kept secret, he added: “Oops. Move along. Nothing to see here. PS. But seriously – I have a really strong feeling they hinted it a few times.”

I would expect that this will be some integration with My Nintendo, that has long indicated that Nintendo Switch rewards are “coming soon.” Through the rewards programme, Nintendo has already had the chance to experiment with their own achievements – My Nintendo Missions – that have been integrated with Fire Emblem Heroes, Super Mario Run, and Miitomo, as well as services such as Miiverse and the Nintendo eShop.

As recently as E3 2017, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime had stated that it was “a priority to make My Nintendo much more meaningful moving forward.” This would certainly be a step in the right direction.
