After the critical success that had surrounded Nintendo 3DS exclusive Metroid: Samus Returns, it won’t come as a particular surprise that rumours swirl that an unannounced 2D Metroid game may be in development.

That was sparked on Resetera, where user mocolostrocolos revealed that the unannounced project is in a “really early production state.”

“As far as I know, there’s an unannounced 2D Metroid game on development on a really early production state,” mocolostrocolos explained. “[I] can’t say the studio though, don’t want to jeopardise my source.”

Those that may immediately question the user’s credibility should know that they accurately leaked that Nintendo was working on a Metroid II: Return of Samus remake that was in development for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo 3DS, and that it was being handled by an external developer.

That, as we now know, turned out to be Metroid: Samus Returns, which was revealed at E3 2017 and developed in collaboration with MercurySteam – who many will know for their work on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.
