Rumour: GameCube Games To Be Available For Download On Wii U

It would seem that a Nintendo of America executive may have inadvertently confirmed that GameCube games may be available for digital download on Wii U.

It is already confirmed that GameCube discs won’t be compatible with the new console, but Amber McCollom, Director of Entertainment & Trend Marketing at Nintendo of America, stated that titles would be available to download through WiiWare.

“GameCube discs will not be compatible with Wii U, but a number of the games that were playable on GameCube can be downloaded from WiiWare,” McCollom explained to NintendoGal.

Of course, it’s more than likely that she really meant that they will be available through Virtual Console rather than WiiWare.

Nintendo of America have since responded to queries regarding such comments, adding in a statement to Destructoid: “To clarify the capabilities of the Wii U system: As correctly stated, Wii U will not play Nintendo GameCube discs, however Nintendo has not made any announcements regarding downloadable content.”
