Square Enix is planning to release Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2 “at some point this summer,” according to a report from TheGamer.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade may have only been released for the portable home console successor last week, but it means that the second game in the Mako-powered remake trilogy won’t be too far behind.

When asked in an interview with Nintendo about what fans can expect from the next games in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy on Nintendo Switch 2, director Naoki Hamaguchi had responded: “There’s not a huge amount of information I can share in terms of future games, but I can reassure players that we’re working on the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second game in the series, and the third game too. They are being worked on for Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the other platforms right now.”

In looking to provide a more specific answer, TheGamer has reported: “While [Final Fantasy remake trilogy director Naoki] Hamaguchi was unable to share ‘a huge amount of information,’ we’ve learned at TheGamer that the current plan is for Rebirth to release on the Switch 2 at some point this summer. Of course, schedules can change, and delays can happen, but we’ve been able to confirm the current plan with multiple sources.”

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth picks up where at the conclusion of the first game, ex-SOLDIER Cloud Strife and his companions escaping Midgar and stepping out into the wider world.

We heaped praise on the company’s efforts to port Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade to Nintendo Switch 2, concluding in our review: “Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is and isn’t a lot of things. It’s a very good action-RPG with a strong presentation. It’s a real trip for fans of the original game. It demonstrates how you can Remake but you cannot truly remake. It’s a fairly well-done port to Nintendo’s new console. For some, it’s a reminder of some of the good times of the past. It might also be a reminder of how far in the past those specific good times were. It’s cool. It’s retro. It’s even got a bit of commentary on our modern fixation with mining the past. I can strongly recommend it, albeit with the caveat that you aren’t going to get any meaningful plot resolution within this part of the overall story. If you’re okay with that, then all I can say is… let’s mosey.”

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is now available at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide.
