Industry sources have revealed that Activision has axed its hugely successful Guitar Hero series, cancelled United Front’s True Crime, and made a number of severe layoffs at DJ Hero developer Freestyle Games, according to reports from Eurogamer.

Whilst the news isn’t yet official, an announcement is expected to be made later today ahead of the publication of Activision’s financial results.

Last December, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg had commented that the music category in general did “not have the same mass appeal” as it once did, before later adding that “the road to rejuvenating that category goes through innovation.”

Eurogamer has sought confirmation on such inside rumour from both UK developer Freestyle Games and Activision, yet both have yet to respond.
