In recent weeks, a rumor had surfaced that Microsoft was making preparations to support Nintendo Switch with Project xCloud and Xbox Game Pass. That rumor soon gained more credibility and traction after multiple publications threw their weight behind it.

However, now Thurrott executive editor Brad Sams has shared that multiple sources have indicated to him that the Netflix-style subscription service won’t be coming to the portable home console “in the near-term.”

With a proven track record in revealing more about Microsoft’s next-gen consoles – believed to be two devices codenamed Anaconda and Lockhart – the current plans that he has learned about don’t point to Xbox Game Pass coming to Nintendo Switch in the near future but don’t dismiss it from ever happening outright.

“I will throw this out there though. There has been a lot of talk about Game Pass on the Switch. I’m hearing from multiple sources that’s not happening. Let me qualify. That’s definitely not happening in the near-term,” Sams explained in a recent video.

“I can’t ever say never, because Microsoft wants Game Pass on TVs, they want it PCs, they want it on Xbox, they want it everywhere with their xCloud stuff. But as of right now, I am hearing from multiple people that it is not coming to the Switch. Obviously, things could change and all that good stuff. Don’t expect Game Pass on the Switch anytime soon. At least, that’s what I’m hearing.”

With Microsoft to only start trialing Project xCloud this year, more time is likely needed until their “state-of-the-art global game-streaming technology” will be ready for use on Nintendo Switch – if that rumor is happening. And, simply by extension, that could suggest that it is simply too early for Microsoft and Nintendo to iron out details about Xbox Game Pass coming to the console.
