The chance to play, create and share your own courses were ingredients for success with Super Mario Maker, the game’s creation tools allowing players to surprise and frustrate others around the world with their devious designs.

Given the game’s popularity on Wii U – it went on to sell more than 4 million copies worldwide – it shouldn’t come as a surprise that rumors now surface that Nintendo is hard at work on a sequel for Nintendo Switch. That’s according to credible insider King Zell, who, along with Pikmin 3 Deluxe, has shared on ResetEra that Super Mario Maker 2 is in development and will be revealed this year.

If true, whether that happens in the next Nintendo Direct presentation that’s rumored to broadcast next week or if the news will be saved for E3 2019 is unclear.

Since ported to Nintendo 3DS in a more limited version, we were big fans of the original release – concluding in our review: “Super Mario Maker delights in the unexpected, Nintendo’s desire to surprise now being passed on to aspiring creators who are left alone to unleash their own creativity on the Mushroom Kingdom.

“It’s another success for the Wii U GamePad, and with an expansive and yet intuitive toolset I’m particularly looking forward to seeing what creations emerge over the coming months and years.”
