Game Source Entertainment, TVT Studios and Ratata Arts have announced their decision to delay the release of their rhythm roguelike Ratatan on Nintendo Switch 2.

“First I would like to send my heartfelt gratitude to all the backers who have supported us so far. This game was only made possible through the initial support on Kickstarter. Though the trials and tribulations of developing the game, it has been the backers’ support that has kept us going,” producer Sakajiri Kazuto wrote in an update post on Steam.

“Unfortunately, we just need a little extra development time and had to delay the release of the game. I’m truly sorry about this delay for all the backers that have been waiting patiently so far.

“In our initial development plan we didn’t expect to do Early Access and then adjust the game to the level that we did based on that feedback. Of course, due to that feedback, RATATAN is even better than we planned.

“However, online support, building the game out for a large number of platforms, and improving the overall game experience has meant that we needed more development time.

“We looked at all the choices and decided that we’d rather make the best game we can through delaying the release.

“I do strongly believe that due to this delay we can make the best product possible and plan to put our all into it. For me, everyone here isn’t just a backer, they are a friend who has helped us build the game along the way. RATATAN only exists thanks to your support.

“I sincerely apologize for the delay but have the utmost confidence in releasing a great game on October 15th. We will do everything we can to make this great so thank you so very, very much for your understanding.”

This spiritual successor to Japan Studio and Pyramid’s beloved Patapon is set on an island called Rataport, which, in contrast to the vast and tranquil sea, is “as lively as a toy box.” Here, a strange animal-like creature called Ratatan lives happily with its friends, the Cobun.

Despite their different appearances and personalities, they share a common dream, which is to go to The Everafter and meet The Goddess, who is said to live there. No matter how many times they fail, they will never give up on their dream of meeting her one day.

The game is being developed in collaboration with Patapon series producer Hiroyuki Kotani. You play as Ratatan, using magical instruments to the beat to deliver different commands to the armies of Cobun to attack the enemies. If you accurately follow the rhythm sequences, you will enter Fever Mode, in which the background music changes interactively and characters perform different actions.

The publisher has outlined the game’s key features, which include:

  • Rhythm action: Feel the beat and use rhythm sequences in time to order your Cobuns in the direction you want them to go. Since the Ratatans can be moved freely, your judgment to decide where to give orders, where to position the Ratatans, and when to retreat is critical.
  • 2D animation: We want to emphasise the unique performance of 2D animation and put lively personality into the action.

Ratatan will be released digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide on 15 October 2026.
