Nintendo has announced that Pokémon Crystal will release on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS, allowing players to return to the Johto region once more.

It has been 17 years since the expanded version of Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver was launched in Japan, and it is remembered as being the first game in the Pokémon series that not only let players choose between a male or female playable character but introduced animations during battles.

Pokémon Crystal will also be compatible with Pokémon Bank from launch, which, for those that haven’t used it before, is a paid service that lets players transfer select Pokémon from classic Pokémon games to newer games in the series.

Players will also have the chance to encounter the mythical Pokémon Celebi in an event after completing the game, which, in the original version, could only happen by using a special accessory.

Nintendo adds that Pokémon Crystal will also use the wireless communication capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, meaning that players can enjoy Link Trades and Link Battles with other players. And, thanks to the Time Capsule feature, you can trade and battle with Pokémon from Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition, too.

Pokémon Crystal will release on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS worldwide on 26th January 2018 and will be made available in a limited packaged version at retailers in Europe and Japan on the same day.
