With the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition discontinued worldwide, Hyperkin has looked to step in with an alternative.

The RetroN HD is a region-free micro console by design, meaning that it supports both PAL and NTSC NES cartridges. The key reason why it should pique your interest is that it will upscale each game to 720p resolution, which, as Hyperkin is quick to point out, has been achieved through “pure hardware” rather than emulation.

It will come with a new premium controller dubbed the Cadet that has a 10-foot cable, a 3-foot HD cable, and a 6-foot Micro USB charge cable with USB AC Adapter.

“This is the best time to be an NES enthusiast. With the advent of the NES Classic Edition, Capcom’s Disney Afternoon Collection, and just a general resurgence in 8-bit gaming, the RetroN HD is both the perfect time machine and gateway console for playing real NES cartridges in your modern living room,” enthused Hyperkin product developer Chris Gallizzi.

The RetroN HD will release in the United Kingdom on May 25th and is now available to pre-order, priced at £49.99.
