Ysbryd Games and Panstasz have confirmed a release window for World of Horror on Nintendo Switch, news that was shared in this week’s Indie World showcase.

This unsettling cosmic horror retro RPG is set in a small, seaside town in Japan. The Old Gods have reawakened and are clawing their way back into a world that has spiralled into a mysterious madness.

With the population’s sanity dwindling thanks to the otherworldly, grotesque creatures that terrorise those who call the place home, the only solution is to confront the terror that reigns over the apocalyptic end of the world.

It is down to you to make your way through this hellish, rogue-lite reality through turn-based combat and unforgiving choices, building a deck of event cards that will lead to different outcomes in your battles against the darkness.

With branching stories that follow five playable characters who choose to brave the chaos, you must unravel puzzles and mysteries through spells that sacrifice their sanity. This love letter to the works of Junji Ito and H.P. Lovecraft is free of typical jump scares, and is complemented with a haunting chiptune score and a 1-bit art style with different palettes.

The publisher has outlined the game’s key features as below:

  • Solve twisted mysteries inspired by cosmic horror and Eldritch mythology, with procedurally generated combat encounters, twists, and endings.
  • Survive challenging RPG combat where every decision means life, death, or madness.
  • Create spookier adventures with a full set of modding tools. Create your own mysteries, remix existing ones, or brave the sadistic creations of friends.
  • Enjoy haunting 1-bit artwork drawn entirely in Microsoft Paint. Fill in the cinematic gaps with your fearful mind’s eye.

World of Horror will release digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide in Summer 2023.
