Pokémon director Junichi Masuda has shared his condolences after news emerged yesterday that Hiroshi Yamauchi had passed away.

Explaining that the former Nintendo president had “loved Pokémon,” Masuda revealed that Pokémon X & Y had surpassed 1 million pre-orders and seemingly hopes to make him proud as the Nintendo 3DS exclusives near launch. Though what’s unclear is to whether such a pre-order figure is solely related to Japan, or worldwide.

“I just found out about the news regarding the death of former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi,” Masuda wrote on Twitter. “He created the Famicom, and the game business in Japan, and made it into a recognised part of the game industry around the world. And he also loved Pokémon.

“Mr. Yamauchi, today we surpassed one million pre-orders for [Pokémon] X & Y. I pray from the bottom of my heart for your happiness in the next world.”
