The Pokémon Company International has revealed that sales of the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) and toys saw continued growth across Europe in 2017, building on the record-breaking sales performance in 2016.

There is more to be happy about than just that, however, as Pokémon TCG is the top Strategic Trading Card Game property in Europe, with NPD Group Toys tracking that retail sales exceeded €100 million. With such games selling more than €122 million across Europe in 2017, it means that Pokémon TCG holds an 82 percent market share.

To break that down, sales have seen 42 percent growth in the United Kingdom, 56 percent in Spain, and 644 percent in Italy. Pokémon toy sales also rose in 2017, with a 54 percent increase in the United Kingdom, 14 percent in Germany, and 146 percent in Italy.

“2017 was another exceptional year for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. We are the number one Strategic Card Game in Europe, and the UK toy industry voted the Pokémon Trading Card Game the top Pocket Money Toy of the Year,” Pokémon TCG Sales Europe vice president Simon Benton.

“The continued success is [a] testament to the fantastic support of all our retailers and the Pokémon TCG’s huge appeal, and with further expansions and promotions planned, we expect another strong performance in 2018.”

The Pokémon Company International senior director of marketing Peter Murphy adds: “Wicked Cool Toys’ first Pokémon master toy range has been fantastically well received by retailers and the media at the recent toy fairs in London and Nuremberg. The huge interest in the new toy line is hugely encouraging, and we expect sales to continue to rise when the range launches later this year.”

To coincide with this news, The Pokémon Company International added that Pokémon TCG won Pocket Money Toy of the Year at the Toy Industry Awards, while the Pokémon toys made by Wicked Cool Toys won the Toy Fair 2018 Editor’s Choice Award.
