The Pokémon Company, Creatures Inc. and design firm nendo have teamed up to produce Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic, news that was shared to mark Pokémon Day this week.

This collaboration is pitched as a “premium Pokémon TCG set that is designed to last a lifetime,” coming with a foldable, portable two-player game board which has card placement zones for your Active Pokémon, Benched Pokémon, deck, discard pile, and Prize cards. With a compartment at the board’s centre, it can hold up to three decks and a toolbox with the accessories that you need to battle.

Coming with three specially constructed decks featuring Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise, these will have “newly printed cards to go alongside the classics, letting you form new strategies with never-before-seen cards like Ho-Oh ex and Lugia ex.” Except for Basic Energy cards, it has been confirmed that the cards in these decks are not legal for tournament play.

Meanwhile, inside the toolbox you will find stackable damage counters, three-dimensional Poison and Burn markers, and metal orbs that take the place of Pokémon coins. You can roll these metal orbs down a small chute at the centre of the toolbox – if it lands in a white-bordered hole it’s treated as heads, and if it lands in a black-bordered hole it is treated as tails.

“Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic is designed to be a premium Pokémon TCG set that will last a lifetime, created by the design firm nendo, Creatures and The Pokémon Company as a joint production,” The Pokémon Company president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara explains. “We’ll be providing a sneak peek at the product at the Pokémon World Championships, so I hope you will all come and check it out.”

Inside Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic, you will find:

  • A game board that folds up to store all the items included in Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic.
  • A toolbox for storing stackable damage counters, Poison and Burn markers, and metal orbs.
  • Three Pokémon TCG decks featuring Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise, as well as newly printed cards to go along with the classics.
  • Three deck boxes featuring Energy symbols matching the included Pokémon TCG decks.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic will be made available through the Pokémon Center and at local game stores in late 2023.
