Nintendo has confirmed that QR Codes that can be used to discover information about a specific Pokémon with the QR Scanner function in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will be region-locked.

That news was discovered on the official Pokémon website, on which a post discusses the Magearna distribution that will take place in Japan this summer.

Those that participate will receive a Magearna disc for Pokémon Ga-Olé, which will also have a QR Code to scan in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon that will see you unlock Magearna. This specifically mentions that they can only be used with Japanese versions of the Nintendo 3DS exclusive.

Once scanned, players can register the corresponding Pokémon in the Alola region to their Rotom Pokédex, which will let them learn where they live so that they can start searching for it.

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will release exclusively for Nintendo 3DS in North America, Australia and New Zealand on November 18th, and in Europe on November 23rd.
