“Hello there! Glad to meet you!” After Professor Oak has welcomed you to the world of Pokémon, you will be asked to introduce yourself. In Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee!, that will not only ask you to select your character’s appearance and name, but also to decide on your friendly rival’s name.

This rival character is a boy who is your childhood friend and grew up right next door to you. But, even after all those years, it’s hard to come up with an immediate answer when Professor Oak asks you the question: “What is your rival’s name?”

And, if we’re being honest, there isn’t actually a correct answer. With Game Freak leaving the names in the hands of players, the only clues that we have to go on are the handful of Nintendo Treehouse livestreams that have happened in the lead up to launch.

In these livestreams, the names that they chose were Chase for the male protagonist, Elaine for the female protagonist and Trace as the rival’s name. Whether these names are to be considered canon is unclear, but it’s likely that most players, when no other names come to mind, will come to use them in the Nintendo Switch exclusives.

In any case, Trace is a much more supportive rival than those that you have had to compete against in your past Pokémon adventures. And, depending on which version you choose to buy, he will have the opposite Pokémon to you – Eevee if you bought Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pikachu if you went with Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee!.

If you need more pointers on the Nintendo Switch exclusives, we have more guides about the games below. Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee! are now available exclusively for Nintendo Switch worldwide.
