Dreams of attempting to catch ’em all in real life will take a step closer to reality in Pokémon GO, a collaborative project that has today been announced for mobile devices.

That has seen The Pokémon Company, Niantic and Nintendo join forces to craft a ground breaking experience that will encourage fans to search their surroundings in the real world to discover and capture Pokémon.

The Pokémon series has long used real world locations to inspire its fantasy settings, whether that be the Hokkaido and Kanto regions of Japan, New York or Paris. Pokémon GO will allow players to catch, trade, and battle in the real world by using location information, by exploring their neighborhoods, communities and the world.

GAME FREAK’s Junichi Masuda will contribute to the project, ensuring that the Pokémon series’ sense of fun and adventure successfully makes its way into Pokémon GO. He will also explore ways to connect the project to the main Pokémon series, with in-app purchases confirmed for Pokémon GO.

Players can enhance their experience when they are away from their smartphones by using the Pokémon GO Plus. Which, by pressing a button on the device, will allow you to catch Pokémon, and has been developed and manufactured by Nintendo – connecting to smartphones via Bluetooth and will notify players about events nearby through flashing and vibrating.

“Our challenge was to develop a great game for smart phone devices that expressed the core values of Pokémon. Pokémon GO is the answer to that challenge,” The Pokémon Company president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara shared.

Niantic founder and CEO John Hanke adds, “Pokémon GO is a wonderful combination of Niantic’s real world gaming platform and one of the most beloved franchises in popular culture. Our partnership with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo is an exciting step forward in real-world gaming and using technology to help players discover the world and people around them.”

Pokémon GO will be available for download at no charge on the App Store and Google Play in 2016.
