Pitchford discusses Nintendo Network expectations on Wii U

Whilst much remains unknown regarding the Nintendo Network that will be implemented for Wii U, Randy Pitchford has pointed towards the online service offering “functionality that you’d kind of expect”.

The Gearbox Software president explained that they wouldn’t be bringing Aliens: Colonial Marines to the system, if the online platform couldn’t support the game’s competitive modes.

“Now, Nintendo hasn’t revealed much about their online plans yet, and we’re certainly dependent on their platform,” he began in an interview with GameSpot.

“But to the extent that their platform offers the online functionality that you’d kind of expect, that they’ll discuss in due course, you want to feel confident that if you get the Wii U version of the game that you are going to be able to get online and have that competitive game as well.

“Of course that’s gotta be a part of that, otherwise it’d feel unnatural for us having made such an effort for the game on that platform.”

Even competitive multiplayer will benefit from the system’s unique controller, enabling Gearbox Software to de-clutter the main screen.

“What’s kinda cool too, is that when I’m playing competitive sometimes I like to look at the score but hate having to cover the screen with an overlay,” Pitchford explains. “But, guess what, I can look down at the Wii U screen and if I want to keep the score there, or whatever, I can quickly glance and not worry about overlays or sub-menus. It’s kinda neat.”

Aliens: Colonial Marines will release for Wii U later this year.
