OurMine Take Pokémon GO Servers Down In Second DDOS Attack

Pokémon GO was unplayable for several hours on Saturday, after PoodleCorp targeted the augmented reality app’s servers with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

Niantic were eventually able to recover, but login issues soon hampered the experience again on Sunday. Now, OurMine has claimed responsibility for the second DDoS attack, saying that they spent several hours hitting the login servers.

The hacking team, believed to be a three-person group of teenagers, are trying to make a name for themselves by raising awareness about the importance of security. They reason that if they didn’t target popular games someone else would, and, in doing so, their attacks will push for Niantic to introduce stronger security measures.

“No one will be able to play this game till Pokémon GO contact us on our website to teach them how to protect it!,” they wrote on their website.

Niantic has since restored the service back to normal, but it is unclear as to whether preventative measures have been made to avoid recurrences.
