The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has confirmed that there will be no Female Link in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

In an interview with GameSpot, Aonuma was pointedly asked about the rumours that had swirled around players being provided a choice about the character’s gender.

Aonuma acknowledged that he was aware of the rumour, adding: “So yes, there were rumors like that, and we did discuss as a staff as to what would be possible if we took that route.”

They ultimately pondered about a different direction, in placing Princess Zelda as the lead character.

“We thought about it, and decided that if we’re going to have a female protagonist it’s simpler to have Princess Zelda as the main character,” Aonuma continued.

That was soon rejected, however. “…if we have princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do? Taking into account that, and also the idea of the balance of the Triforce, we thought it best to come back to this [original] makeup.”
