Nintendo UK observing shift in consumer attitude towards Wii U

Nintendo UK have shared that 2014 has been “quite a good year” for Wii U, shifting attitudes toward the console seeing consumers take a step closer toward purchase.

That’s largely been driven by the company’s refreshing approach to E3 2014, that saw Nintendo of America’s Treehouse enthusiastically stream their upcoming games line-up. Drawing the most Twitter conversation was evidence enough that their daring move worked, standing out from the shadow of their competition.

“The Wii U has had quite a good year so far. We’ve really seen momentum pick up with Mario Kart 8 back in May. That was when we saw a step change, not just in terms of sales but also people’s attitudes to Wii U,” marketing director Shelly Pearce shared with MCV.

“People are starting to consider buying now, which was cemented by our E3 activity. All the software that we showed then gave people confidence that there were lots of games coming that they wanted. It is still about driving hardware to Nintendo fans. We have some support, but there’s still more out there. And then we will broaden the console out to families around Christmas time.”

Nintendo UK may be looking toward Christmas to help drive success, but also beyond and at the strong line-up that is already building for 2015 – with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Splatoon, Xenoblade Chronicles X and The Legend of Zelda looming on the horizon.

“One of the key things for us is that people are staring to realise what software there is, what games they can get this Christmas, but importantly a lot of key stuff that is coming next year, too,” Pearce adds. “It is a really strong line-up. We are expecting to see real growth from Wii U this Christmas and we will continue to build on that next year.”
