Nintendo of America have confirmed that they will launch Nintendo TVii across North America on Thursday 20th December.

For those unaware, this is a free, integrated service for Wii U, that allows you to view satellite, cable and video-on demand channels.

At launch, Amazon Instant Video and Hulu Plus subscriptions will be available through Nintendo TVii, with Netflix subscriptions and TiVo shortly expected to be supported in early 2013. Although, of course, the separate Netflix application already on Wii U will continue to work until then.

Nintendo TVii provides social features that allow you to share your experiences with friends as they happen live, through Miiverse, Facebook and Twitter. You’ll also be able find more information about what you’re watching, such as cast details, reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, and sports data such as scores.

“After December 20th, you’ll never look at your TV the same way again,” comments Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime.

“Wii U owners have already experienced the transformative effect that the GamePad has on game play and social interaction. Nintendo TVii shows how the integrated second screen of the GamePad can also transform and enhance the TV viewing experience. Welcome to the new world of TVii.”
