Nintendo has announced that 14.86 million Nintendo Switch consoles have been sold worldwide, that, as was expected, has seen it outsell the Wii U (which sold 13.56 million consoles in its lifetime) in the space of 10 months.

The plucky portable home console’s sales had started strongly, with 2.74 million units being shifted worldwide in March alone to see it become the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history.

While the console’s production was said to have been hampered by component shortages, it soon hit 4.7 million units worldwide and then, most recently, struck 10 million units worldwide midway through December.

If you want to know which games are proving to be most popular, Super Mario Odyssey has sold 9.07 million copies, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 7.33 million, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold 6.7 million, while Splatoon 2 has sold 4.91 million. Meanwhile, 1-2-Switch has sold 1.88 million, ARMS has sold 1.61 million, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has sold 1.06 million.

For comparison’s sake, Mario Kart 8 sold 8.4 million copies on Wii U, and the original Splatoon sold 4.91 million – showing that the sequel is selling better in a far shorter space of time.

Nintendo will now look to continue to build on their success in 2018 with games such as Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, Kirby Star Allies, Mario Tennis Aces, and Nintendo Labo, that was revealed this week as “a new line of interactive build-and-play experiences designed to inspire creative minds.”
