Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed early details on how the Nintendo Switch Online Service will be priced.

He shared that a 12-month subscription would be priced between 2,000 (£13.95) – 3,000 yen (£20), and that Nintendo had decided to introduce a paid service as it would make it easier for them to support online features such as multiplayer in their games.

That news came in an interview with Nikkei, for which Kantan Games CEO Dr. Serkan Toto had translated the key points for reference.

With there having been no cost across Wii U, Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS, this is a clear sign that Nintendo wants consumers to see that they have become far more committed to their online service.

To make a quick comparison a 12-month PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription is priced at £39.99, necessary to enjoy online multiplayer, receive free games, use party chat services and have access to exclusive discounts.

Nintendo Switch will launch worldwide on Friday 3rd March, priced at £279.99 ($299.99).
