Nintendo has announced that more than 122.55 million Nintendo Switch consoles have now been sold worldwide.

In the nine months that cover the start of April up until 31st December 2022, 14.91 million consoles have been sold which represented a 21.3 percent year-on-year decline. Nintendo attributes this “to a shortage of semiconductors and other component supplies that impacted production until around late summer.”

The company also observed the “diversification of motives” as to why consumers chose to buy a specific Nintendo Switch model, explaining: “In addition to first-time purchases, we are seeing many consumers choose Nintendo Switch – OLED Model as a replacement or as an additional purchase.

“Global sell-through declined year-on-year, affected by the impact of the semiconductor shortage on production through the first half. In addition, for the months of October through December, the upswing in sales during the holiday season was smaller than those of the past two years. As a result, hardware unit sales for April through December declined compared to the same period last year, when Nintendo Switch – OLED Model was released.

“The number of annual playing users, which indicates the number of consumers who have opened software on Nintendo Switch at least once in the past year, continues to increase. The number of annual playing users between January and December 2022 exceeded 112 million users, indicating that the foundation of our business is continuing to expand.”

Nintendo has now sold more than 994.30 million Nintendo Switch games, and, if you want to know which are proving to be most popular, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 52 million, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 41.59 million, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold 30.44 million copies,  The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold 29 million, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield have sold 25.68 million, while Super Mario Odyssey has sold 25.12 million copies.

Meanwhile, Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet have sold 20.61 million, Super Mario Party has sold 18.79 million, Ring Fit Adventure has sold 15.22 million copies and Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee! have sold 15.07 million.
