Nintendo of America has announced that Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in the United States will not open on Wednesday 9 April as it had originally planned.
Such a decision has been made “to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions,” presumably in how much this will impact the pricing for the portable home console successor as much as its accessories and games.
“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date,” a Nintendo of America spokesperson confirmed to GameSpot. “The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.”
Believing that the United States has a bad deal in global trade, President Donald Trump this week imposed sweeping tariffs on goods from most countries that are being imported into the country.
Countries deemed to be the “worst offenders” were hit with even higher rates, with China, as an example, now facing a 54% import tax. China has today stated that it will retaliate with an additional 34% import tax on goods from the United States next week.
The BBC reports that China has filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO), stating that the imposed tariff “seriously violates WTO rules, damages the legitimate rights and interests of WTO members, and undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system and the international economic and trade order.
“It is a typical unilateral bullying practice that endangers the stability of the global economic and trade order. China firmly opposes this.”
Nintendo Switch 2 will be released at retailers around the world on 5 June 2025.
