Nintendo has confirmed that Nintendo Switch 2 only supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) when played in Handheld Mode.
The company’s product page for the portable home console had stated: “Take in all the detail with screen resolutions up to 4K when you connect the Nintendo Switch 2 system to a compatible TV using the dedicated dock. The system also supports HDR, VRR, and frame rates up to 120 fps on compatible TVs.”
This text was removed without explanation, resulting in confusion about whether it had been accurate or not. We now know that it was not.
“Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error,” a Nintendo spokesperson confirmed to Nintendo Life.
When asked whether support for VRR could be added to TV Mode in a future system update, Nintendo responded: “We have nothing to announce on this topic.”
Nintendo Switch 2 will be released at retailers around the world on 5 June 2025, priced at £395.99 in the United Kingdom, €469.99 across Europe, and $449.99 in the United States.
