Nintendo has promised to share news about its successor to the Nintendo Switch at some point between now and before March 2025.

To immediately temper short-term expectations, the company made a rare move to confirm that its next Nintendo Direct presentation will be broadcast next month. This will focus on games that are releasing for the remainder of the year, rather than revealing any details about the hotly-anticipated successor console.

“This is [Shuntaro] Furukawa, President of Nintendo,” his message on X reads, which was shared on the Japanese company’s official account. “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015.

“We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

The original Nintendo Switch has now sold more than 141 million units since it was first released in March 2017. However, even though the company’s gross profit has increased by 7.8 percent year-on-year, its console sales have declined 12.6 percent in the same time frame, demonstrating a need for it to reinvigorate the market with whatever hardware it has planned next.
