Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has stated that the company will be unable to meet the demand for Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders through its My Nintendo Store.
After opening a lottery process for customers to be rewarded with the chance to pre-order the portable home console successor, more than 2.2 million people applied in Japan alone. That has far exceeded the company’s expectations, however, resulting in a situation where the My Nintendo Store does not have enough stock to meet the demand.
“Furukawa here. We have proceeded with the production of Nintendo Switch 2 by procuring a lot of components beforehand, in order to deliver them to everybody’s hands. On 2 April, we announced the details of Nintendo Switch 2 and opened applications for lottery sales on My Nintendo Store. But as a result, we have an extreme lot of people applying for it, which is around 2.2 million people in Japan alone,” Furukawa wrote on X, with thanks to BlackKite for the translation.
“However, this massively surpasses our prior assumptions, and it ended up largely exceeding the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles we can deliver from My Nintendo Store on 5 June. As such, it will be very unfortunate that a considerable number of customers are expected to not get chosen when we announce the results tomorrow on 24 April.
“In My Nintendo Store, those who weren’t chosen in the 1st lottery sales will be automatically redirected to the 2nd lottery sales, so that they don’t have to go the hassle of applying once again. However, we are unable to respond to all applications received even with the stocks for the 2nd lottery sales. Even though we have prepared beforehand, we still cannot live up to everyone’s expectations, and we deeply apologize for that.
“Right now, as we receive these product demands, we are working on things like enhancing the production structure even further. And as for the product shipments, starting from tomorrow 24 April, physical and online game shops all around Japan will start accepting applications for pre-orders or lottery sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 console. (For more details, please check the guidance from each store.)
“In My Nintendo Store, we will also continue its sales even after the release date. (We will inform the details at a later date.) From hereafter we will continue to ship the stocks while receiving support from retailers, and we will continue to strive to deliver Nintendo Switch 2 to everyone’s hands as many as possible. Moreover, we are also setting up plans to produce and ship a considerable amount of Nintendo Switch 2 in the future. We’re very sorry that we end up taking more time until we can live up to everyone’s expectations, but we hope you can kindly bestow us with your understanding.”
Nintendo Switch 2 will be released at retailers around the world on 5 June 2025, priced at £395.99 in the United Kingdom, €469.99 across Europe, and $449.99 in the United States.
