Nintendo of America CEO and President Reggie Fils-Aime has discussed the latest hardware sales figures for North America from NPD, confirming that both its Wii console and DS handheld remain to be far ahead of their competitiors.

Life-time sales for the DS currently stand at 43.1 million units with the Wii having achieved 30.4 million, Fil-Aime revealed to investors at a BMO Capitals Market presentation in New York. In relation, the Xbox 360 has sold 21.9 million, PSP 17.7 million and the PlayStation 3 13.5 million.

Such figures therefore demonstrating that even the Wii has maintained an 8.5 million unit lead over the Xbox 360, and 16.9 million in front of the PS3.

Whilst analysts may worry about dwindling sales, it’s hard not to be impressed by the audience that Nintendo has been able to attract through its products this generation. Let’s hope that the 3DS will begin to follow suit next year.
