Nintendo: Star Fox 64 3D has no online multiplayer due to “vast” costs

It was a disappointment when Nintendo revealed that Star Fox 64 3D would lack an online multiplayer, yet the company has recently revealed the reasons behind such a decision.

Believe it or not, it is actually due to the costs necessary for including online support being too “vast”.

“Personally, I play a lot of online FPS games,” commented Yusuke Amano, who was responsible for co-ordinating game development between Q-Games and Nintendo, to Official Nintendo Magazine. “This leads me to think that just making multiplayer parts of existing games playable online isn’t enough to create a satisfying experience for users. The popular online games work in lots of things, so they play well online – and if we wanted to satisfy everyone who bought the game, the costs required for including online support would be vast.”

The Nintendo 3DS remake includes remastered visuals alongside gyroscopic controls and the ability to play local multiplayer with up to three other players.

Amano discussed that including online would have taken too much time, especially since Nintendo had a deadline for the game to be released as soon as possible.

“For this project what we needed to do was use Star Fox to provide users with a game that shows the appeal of Nintendo 3DS as quickly as possible,” Amano explained. “We put a lot of effort into the graphics, and if we had included online support then we couldn’t have reached this level in the time allowed.”

However if Nintendo were to release another Star Fox title, Amano confirmed that they would definitely consider incorporating online.

“If I get the chance to work on another Star Fox title, I would definitely consider an online multiplayer mode,” he closed.
