Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the company will reward its employees with a 10 percent pay rise on their base salary.
While reporting year-on-year sales, operating profit and ordinary profit decreases, Reuters reported that Furukawa had reasoned in the company’s earnings briefing that the decision was “important for our long-term growth to secure our workforce.”
It comes as Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida called for companies to pay their employees more as inflation pressurises the country’s economy – as well as others around the world – as well as to attract talent, with a falling birth rate and low immigration risking labour shortages.
This week, the company announced that Nintendo Switch console sales have surpassed 122.5 million units worldwide – meaning that the portable home console has now outsold the Game Boy and PlayStation 4 – with more than 994.30 million games sold.
