With the fiscal year having drawn to a close on 31st March 2014, Nintendo have shared how the company fared financially over the past year.
They were able to record revenues of 571.7 billion yen ($5.6 billion), a fall of 10 percent year-on-year, with losses at 23.2 billion yen ($228.6 million) and profits at 7.1 billion yen ($69.9 million).
It is the Wii U that continues to hold the company’s performance back, achieving sales of only 2.72 million hardware units in the past year. That brings lifetime sales for the console to 6.17 million units, and despite releasing Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Pikmin 3, they shared that “the Wii U business as a whole showed slow growth.”
18.9 million software units were sold throughout the last fiscal year, amounting to lifetime sales of 32.3 million. Whilst a healthy number, the company indicated that such sales didn’t grow as sufficiently as they would have wished.
Last year’s price drop across Europe and North America isn’t helping either, continuing to eat into any profits that they can secure themselves. They are now looking to Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. to build momentum, as well as Nintendo DS titles through the Wii U Virtual Console service.
It is the Nintendo 3DS that provides more positive news, having shifted 12.24 million hardware units. That breaks down to 7.87 million 3DS XL, 2.20 million 2DS, and 2.17 million original 3DS systems. This means that the lifetime installed base has now reached 43.33 million.
In terms of software, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y have seen sales of 12.26 million copies worldwide since their November launch, whereas Animal Crossing: New Leaf has achieved 7.66 million unit sales.
In looking to the future, and the 2014 fiscal year, Nintendo are projecting increased revenue of 590 billion yen ($5.81 billion) and profits of 20 billion yen ($196.9 million), predicting that they will sell another 12 million 3DS and 3.6 million Wii U systems.
