Whereas Sony and Microsoft are continually establishing themselves amongst the mobile phone arena with their Xperia and Windows phones, Nintendo has stated its intent to stay well away despite signing a deal with AT&T to provide internet hotspot access for its latest Nintendo 3DS handheld system.

“We don’t want to be in the phone business,” Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s CEO and President, explained to CNN. “We don’t see that as an opportunity. Phones are utilities. Phones are not by definition entertainment devices.”

According to Fils-Aime, the company doesn’t see the market as an area in which it could gain an advantage over competitors: “It makes sense to enter a market when you feel you’ve got some sort of competitive advantage. From Nintendo’s perspective, we don’t see that we have a competitive advantage in telephony.”

“We have no desire to get into telephony,” he added. “We believe that we will earn our way into someone’s pocket without having to offer that (phone capability) as an additional factor.”
