Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata has signalled plans to release a ‘Mario Kart TV’ smartphone and web compatible service that will support and continue to engage Mario Kart 8’s community beyond launch.

This will connect with the Wii U title’s new feature of the same name, which allows players to upload highlight reels and share them online. Nintendo themselves will share their favourite reels, as well as providing hints and tips that will help players drive their way to glory.

“This web service will enable more people to easily watch Nintendo’s official videos, view rankings, watch videos that their friends have shared and videos of tournaments in which they have participated,” Iwata explained to investors.

He continued to discuss that those logging in to the service with their Nintendo Network IDs will be able to “easily find their rankings, videos that their friends have shared, videos of tournaments in which they have participated, and it will be convenient to access this service through smart devices even when they are not at home.” Although, players can still access and enjoy the application without having to use their NNID.

Mario Kart 8 launches for Wii U across Europe and North America on May 30th.
