Nintendo “investigating” removing region-lock with NX

Nintendo have once again addressed their contentious decision to implement region-locking across Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, with Satoru Iwata reasoning that it wouldn’t be “very realistic” to consider removing it from their current systems at this stage.

However they may very well do so with their next “dedicated game platform”, Nintendo NX. Iwata revealed that they are aware of the demand for a change in their approach from consumers, and that they are “investigating internally” any problems that would arise from implementing such change.

“Removing region-locking from current game machines presents various issues, so we don’t consider that to be very realistic,” Iwata began in his response to investors (translation by Cheesemeister).

“However, regarding NX, given the customer feedback and proposals from the market, while nothing has been decided yet, we’re currently investigating internally what problems there would be in realising it. You can think of that as the current situation. I understand your desire, so I’d like to look at it optimistically going forward.”
