As was expected in the wake of the New Nintendo 3DS XL, the company have called time on the production of the original 3DS XL model.

The news was quietly shared through their website, on which the 3DS XL section is labelled with an “ending production soon” notice. It comes as Japan’s weekly sales chart continue to show that the majority of consumers are turning to the New 3DS XL as their upgrade, rather than the New 3DS which supports customisable cover plates.

Nintendo will continue to manufacture the original 3DS, although only select colour variants such as Clear Black, Metallic Red and Gloss Pink will remain in production.

Media Create estimate that the New 3DS XL will reach 1.2 million hardware sales in Japan by the end of the year, having only launched on October 11th. The recently launched in Australia on November 21st, and will make their way to Europe and North America in 2015.
