Before the Nintendo World Championships 2015, Shigesato Itoi’s video message to announce EarthBound Beginnings was an early highlight for E3 2015.

Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime shared that releasing the localised Mother port through Wii U’s Virtual Console was to service the love that fans have for the franchise, while also introducing it to a new generation that may have yet to experience it.

“We know the love our fans have for that franchise and that series,” Fils-Aime explained to GameSpot. “We thought that making the announcement, and making it immediately available through the [Nintendo] eShop was a great way to service that fan love.

“In terms of where we go from here, again, I have nothing to announce, but the little skit we did at last year’s Digital Event where I’m constantly being asked about Mother 3, it happens! We know the love is there, and we’ll see what happens.”

As to why Nintendo have chosen to release the first game now, he continued: “Really, from our standpoint there are so many consumers who don’t know the fundamental series. We thought it would be best to kind of bring them back to the beginning, to help them understand what it’s all about and why it’s captivated people in such a magnificent way.”
