Nintendo are tripling amiibo production estimates to meet demand

There can be no question that launching amiibo has been a resounding success for Nintendo. But equally, that success has also taken the company by surprise.

With more than a million sold across the United States in the month following their November launch, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed that they hadn’t expected each customer to buy so many amiibo each.

It’s a surprising comment, given by not only in how collectible they are but Nintendo’s long-term plan for the figures – which will shortly see more than 60 amiibo having hit retail within the first year.

“We’re at a point where we have to take our volume estimates and double them or triple them based on the levels of demand we’re seeing,” Fils-Aime shared with CNET. “We’re working very hard to meet that demand.”

Nintendo have apparently been working with suppliers to “push the envelope” to increase production runs, but admitted that “the consumer demand continues to outpace supply.”

We can instead look forward to new amiibo to arrive, whether that be Yarn Yoshi amiibo, those to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., or the Animal Crossing series that will begin with the likes of Isabelle, K.K. Slider and Tom Nook amiibo.

“For us it’s making sure we continue to innovate on the gameplay,” Fils-Aime closed. “I know our content is strong. I know what we’re executing is unique and compelling.”
