Nintendo is gearing up to launch its next-gen console in 2024, having already distributed development kits for it to “key partner studios.”

That’s according to a credible report from VideoGamesChronicle, which cites “multiple people with knowledge of Nintendo’s next-gen console plans.”

They believe that the new hardware will hit retailers “during the second half of 2024,” in an effort to build enough stock for launch and to avoid the shortages that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X were impacted by early on.

Information about what the next console is remains shrouded in secrecy, although the publication’s sources indicated that it can be played in Portable Mode similar to the Nintendo Switch.

Two sources believe that the console will have an LCD screen to reduce costs, especially with the need for it to have an increased storage capacity to allow for higher-fidelity games. It will also continue to support physical games thanks to a cartridge slot, although it is unclear whether the console will be backwards compatible.

Nintendo is keen to convert Nintendo Switch owners across to its next-gen console, but some third-party publishers have shared their concern that backwards compatibility could negatively impact sales of their next-gen games that are in development.
