Next Assassin’s Creed won’t be set in Feudal Japan

We’ve leapt across roofs during the Third Crusade, rebuilt Monteriggioni, relived the American Revolution, and plundered the Caribbean, but the next setting for Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series won’t be Feudal Japan as rumoured.

Instead, it will take place in what Ubisoft Toronto managing director and series creator Jade Raymond describes as her favourite historical era. Whilst she would provide no hints as to what that is, she did take the opportunity during an interview with AdWeek to debunk speculation surrounding Japan.

“When we’re building a franchise, we’re thinking of a whole universe and how we’re developing a meta-story that could live on for many years in games and TV,” Raymond discussed. “If the story has nowhere to go, then you end up with the video game equivalent of The Matrix 2 or something where it’s never going to be quite as genius.”
